Dr. Myfanwy Johns - rightDr. Myfanwy Johns and the Bosnian Cultural Centre-Midlands (BCCM) had a desire to create a permanent piece of artwork and seized the opportunity to apply for a commission at MAC. Thrilled to be selected their combined and complimentary skills will design a carpet, wood panelling and tiled floor area. Our proposal involved a dialogue between traditional and computer driven craft design. The creative relationship between Myfanwy and the core participants has developed into a strong group dynamic. Through her involvement with members of BCCM they were introduced to new materials and contemporary working methods, their collaborative designs have been digitally translated and used to create decorative surfaces fabricated by computer driven machines.

Myfanwy first worked with BCCM on Project B: avlija a project initiated by herself and fellow artist Françoise Dupré together with Sabina Fazlic an architect trained member of BCCM.  Avlija was an art installation based on the courtyard garden space of a traditional Bosnian Muslim home, the work was exhibited as part of Architecture Week and the New Generation Arts Festival 2007. In 2008 Françoise and Myfanwy successfully fundraised to extend Project B into sebilj a proposal to design and build a kiosk shaped structure based on the traditional crafts and patterns used in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Two architectural models and a display of the participatory process were exhibited as part of the New Generation Arts Festival in 2008. BCCM is a registered company and a charity organisation. It was established in 2003 and seeks to provide practical and psychological support for people from a Bosnian ethnic background many of which came to the UK as medical evacuees. Previous projects realised by BCCM include the 2006 oral history project: First Bosnians in the UK.
